The Belle Epoque is marked by industrial inventions, technical progress and innovative artistic movements. At the same time, Belgium rose to third place among European powers.Hence the birth of industrial, merchant and bourgeois fortunes who will turn to daring architects to break the codes of their residences.

Saint-Gilles was urbanized during the Belle Époque, at the very time when art nouveau flourished. Via the ornaments, the exterior decoration, the sgraffito… the facade becomes a vector of messages. Like the return to nature, regularly personified by female figures.

This and other issues will be discussed on this tour of Saint-Gilles, which still houses art nouveau buildings, whose architecture also tells the story of history.
